Is it possible for a minor to make only his father his primary caregiver?

I was told when I was 14 that I had that choice at that time, but I was in Texas. I heard a story on NPR about tapeworms, normally in a digestive tract, that if hatched inside the body, can travel anywhere, and end up in the brain & cause epileptic seizures.
